Hussa bint Salman inaugurates the artist, Mona Al-Qasabi’s fourth exhibition, "Haneen." Her colours and graceful lines express a longing for those who are absent
Riyadh: In a glittering event attended by art lovers, HRH Princess Hussa bint Salman inaugurated Mona Al-Qasabi’s latest exhibition in Riyadh. Entitled “Haneen” (Longing), this is the artist’s fourth exhibition and includes works demonstrating the influence of impressionism on her style, evident in her use of colour and light. Also apparent in her paintings is how Al-Qasabi derives inspiration from the people and way of life in her country. Her graceful, almost ethereal figures display elements of local dress and style. In her speech, Princess Hussa said, "I am honoured to open the fourth exhibition (Haneen) by the artist Mona Al-Qasabi, which includes types of expressive, impressionistic and other art, and highlights her artistic development. Her work is full of originality and is rooted in the country’s heritage." She added that the fine arts "have become an important part of Saudi culture and are experiencing a heyday.”
Princess Hussa continued, “Today, we see art in all regions of the Kingdom, enriching our knowledge, spreading our Saudi experience of life and understanding of art. The quality of the art being produced in the Kingdom today is not measured by the academic education of the artist. Rather, it is measured by the artist's excellence in adding their individual expression to an existing tradition and contributing to a universal channel that increases communication and understanding between cultures."
Princess Hussa stressed how the directive from Saudi Crown Prince, HRH Mohammed bin Salman to all government departments to acquire and display local craft objects and artworks in their headquarters, came within the framework of the State's support for the arts. She also pointed to the importance of the word ‘passion’, which the Crown Prince used. Her Royal Highness added that "Artists and writers will have a role in translating this passion for artistic expression into reality in their choice of art form, so that their work can touch people with positive energy and offer them a recognisable source of enjoyment and pride.“Princess Hussa paid tribute to the efforts of HRH, the late Prince Faisal bin Fahd, the General President of Youth Welfare, who established the first center for teaching fine arts to women, men and children with an approved certificate in the Hijri year, 1402, corresponding to 1982, in the Gregorian calendar.
Her Royal Highness concluded by acknowledging the achievements of the first generation of Saudi artists such as Muhammad Al-Saleem, Abdel Halim Radwa, and others.Mona Al-Qasabi is considered one of the pioneers of art in the Kingdom and Princess Hussa describes her as "the first to open an art exhibition in Jeddah, for women and men to display the works of Saudi and foreign artists and graduates of the Saudi Centre for the Fine Arts." Her Royal Highness commented on the artist’s own style, comparing it to what was once prevalent among artists in Saudi Arabian in terms of symbolic and surreal art, which she explained by their desire to hide “the features of their images. Perhaps it was considered an outlet for them at the time, but now there are no obstacles that limit expression in the artistic field."
For her part, Mona Al-Qasabi expressed her thanks and appreciation to Princess Hussa for sponsoring her exhibition. "One of the most beautiful moments that the artist experiences is the opening of their own exhibition with the participation and attendance of art lovers."
The artist described her work in the exhibition as "full of longing for everyone I miss by my side in this exhibition, and everyone who has loved my work
